Profile

The Nanton Fire Department is a volunteer service consisting of approximately 24 volunteer members.  Fire protection and rescue services are provided to the citizens of our municipality.

Mission

To provide the most efficient fire protection and rescue delivery system for the citizens of and visitors to our municipality.

Organization

The Nanton Fire Department operates under the direction of the Fire Chief who is responsible to the Protection Services committee of the councils of the Town of Nanton and the M.D. of Willow Creek.

In order to deliver the services needed to accomplish the stated mission, the department is organized into four major divisions.

  • Administration Division – responsible for training, apparatus, research and planning public affairs

  • Support Services Division – responsible for inspections, plans review, engineering, permits and investigations

  • Operations Division – responsible for delivery of field services for fire suppression and rescue emergencies

Nanton Fire Department raises funds to purchase apparatus and equipment which minimizes capital expenditures for the department.  They also provide fire prevention, public education, first aid and C.P.R. training programs, etc. to the citizens of our service area.

Active Members

These members directly participate in fire and rescue operations, including incident response and operation of apparatus and equipment.

Men and women between the ages 18 and up who are in good physical condition and have the desire to participate in emergency fire and rescue activities are eligible for this category of membership.

Once minimum training requirements have been met, an individual member can continue to increase their level of participation by obtaining additional training and A.F.T.S. certification.

Membership Procedures

Men and women interested in membership should contact the Town Office or Fire Department.  Each person will make application for membership directly to the Fire Department and Fire Chief.

Training Requirements

All active members entering the system complete a three month training program taught by the Training Division, regardless of whether an individual may have had prior training or experience.

Members, while completing orientation training may begin riding fire and rescue apparatus.  However, they will be assigned a buddy and will assist fully qualified firefighters only when proper supervision is provided.  Rookie members may not enter a burning building, participate in activities requiring advanced training or be subjected to hazardous environments.

Fire Fighter 1

All Active members of the department are required to certify at a FIREFIGHTER 1 level as a minimum.  This is a 96 hour training program which is certified by the province and based on provincially recognized standards of performance.

The program is conducted at the Provincial Fire and Rescue Training Academy and is regularly scheduled at times convenient to volunteers, i.e., evenings and weekends.

Question:

What is the cost of the required training?

Answer:

The required training for service is free of charge providing you successfully complete the course.  Transportation to and from the course is the responsibility of each member.

Question:

How much will I have to pay for my protective clothing and uniforms?

Answer:

All protective clothing is provided to you at no extra cost.  Uniform shirts are issued on rotation of need per year per member.  Pants (black dress or black western cut slacks) and proper dress shoes (leather or black runner) are individual’s responsibility.

Question:

Who provides insurance coverage for my activities as a member?

Answer:

Both the town and M.D. provide insurance for the members including auto liability while operating fire and rescue apparatus, accidental death or disability coverage, medical coverage and comprehensive liability coverage.  The limits of this policy can be obtained from the Town of Nanton.

Question:

After my initial training, how much time will I be expected to give as an active member?

Answer:

A minimum of 8-10 hours per month is desired based on what is needed to keep you proficient in your skills.  This, of course, does not include time spent on actual fire and rescue calls.  You will also be expected to participate in apparatus fund raising activities throughout the year.

Question:

If I have prior fire/rescue training and experience, will it count toward the training requirements I need?

Answer:

In most cases, yes, but it will depend on how current your training is and it must be Alberta courses you have taken.

Question:

Can a woman be an active member?

Answer:

Yes.  The training and physical agility are the same for both male and female.
