The Community Peace Officer is responsible for the investigation and
enforcement of Municipal bylaws, Provincial Statutes,
investigations of business licenses and damage of Town of Nanton
property, and insuring proactive policing.
As a Peace Officer, the overall duty is to protect people and
property and to preserve and maintain the public peace.
Key Areas:

Ensure public compliance with various Town bylaws,

Provide information and interpretation of Municipal bylaw and
Provincial Statute requirements to Town residents,

Administer Town bylaws, and
-
Support and promote the mission, goals, objectives, and policies
and procedures of the Town of Nanton.

Public Safety
As a Special Constable appointed under the Alberta Police Act,
enforce the following seven (7) Provincial Statutes:
When applicable, authority to enforce the Criminal Code is
restricted to arresting, detaining and transporting impaired
drivers and executing warrants, or acting under the direction of
the RCMP.
As the Enforcement Officer appointed under the Municipal
Government Act, enforce Municipal bylaws including:
In accordance with the Municipal Government Act, the Bylaw
Enforcement Officer is a Designated Officer.
The Enforcement Officer time is to be equally divided between
patrolling and enforcing.
Enforcing Duties Include:

Receiving complaints and inquiries, Investigation of complaints,
advising responsible parties of infractions, and taking remedial
actions and/or following enforcement procedures.

Advising responsible parties of infractions, and laying of
charges if founded.

Prepare all necessary documents for prosecution of offenders
including summons, subpoenas, witness statements, and court
briefs, etc.

Assist Town personnel in dealing with bylaw infractions such as
Snow Removal, Garbage pick-up, by educating and/or prosecuting
violators.

Administer the Municipal Government Act Regulations for the
disposal of lost property (ie. Bike auctions).

Administer the Animal Control Bylaw by preparing enforcement
documentation, investigate complaints, and audit titles.

Advise dog tag requirements and maintain dog tag purchase
records.

Record all missing and found dog reports.

Work with kennels, SPCA and other control related agencies.

Conduct public awareness programs.
-
Ensure all animal control needs are met, and recommend
appropriate policies and procedures to meet community needs.

The Enforcement Officer is a statutory position of the Municipal
Government Act for the purpose of ensuring compliance with
Municipal Bylaws. Appointment as a Special Constable under
the Alberta Police Act allows the incumbent to enforce
Provincial Statutes.
Constable George Woof has been employed with the Town of Nanton
since October 1, 2003. Before that, he worked as an
Auxiliary constable for two and a half years with the Town of
Black Diamond. George's background is quite diverse - he
first started in the Canadian Armed Forces as an Armored Gunner
and Driver with the Lord Strathcona Horse (Royal Canadian).
After the military, he was the Operations Manager for a K-9
Alarm response company in Calgary. George has done a lot
of private security for many executives and corporations,
including the security for Global Television during the G-8.
George was also a Provincial Correctional Officer. Cst. George Woof is a qualified Taser
instructor, O.C. Spray instructor as well as a Dangerous Goods
Inspector. He is qualified in Radar and Laser Operations
Intoxiliyzer 400D, P.P.C.T., Baton, and has completed the
Alberta Special Constable Legal program as well as several
Officer Safety programs.
