The Town of Nanton Public Works staff operates a mechanical
wastewater treatment plant that was constructed in 1980.
Extensive upgrades, designed by Associated Engineering, were
conducted in the summer of 2002 to exceed Alberta Environment’s
requirements. The plant discharges treated wastewater on a
continuous basis to Mosquito Creek.

The Town’s first wastewater treatment plant was constructed in
the early 1940’s. In the 1960’s and again in 1980, the
wastewater treatment plant facilities were rebuilt. The most
recent upgrade to the existing wastewater treatment plant
improved the performance, reliability and operation of the
facility. The work was required as a part of the conditions
required by Alberta Environment Approvals for operating the
plant.
The Town of Nanton’s wastewater collection system is primarily
a gravity system which is divided into two catchment areas.
The larger of the two catchment areas conveys sewage by gravity
directly to the wastewater treatment plant. The smaller of the
two catchment areas has a lift station which receives sewage
from a gravity collection system and pumps sewage into the
larger area just upstream of the wastewater treatment plant.
